Feel the power of nature as the water-powered sawmill transforms timbers into boards. Sawmill demonstration immediately follows the Sawpit demonstration, but the Sawmill is always open to explore.
The Historic Mill Creek sawmill was built during the early years of the Industrial Revolution. At that time, there was a growing interest in machinery and in discovering new years of manufacture.
Oliver Evans, an American “mechanic,” was interested in mills and water power. He is said to have astounded neighbors by going fishing while his mill cleaned, ground, and sifted the flour, unattended.
In his book about mills, The Young Mill-Wright and Miller’s Guide, Evans illustrated the mechanism of an automatic mill, probably similar to what is at Historic Mill Creek.
